Vela was originally formed as an
R&D group within The Home Shopping Network (HSN) in 1992 to research and develop
video compression technologies for use in content creation, video distribution,
digital ad insertion, video on demand, and near video on demand. The early
products gained recognition and adopters beyond HSN’s internal uses, and Vela
evolved into a company that worked with end user and OEM customers to provide
digital video solutions for these and other applications.
Vela was formally launched as a commercial entity in 1994. The Company is an active
member of the National Association of Broadcasters and the MPEG standards
committee developing the standards for MPEG-2
and MPEG-4. Corporate headquarters
are located in Clearwater, FL, USA and operates through regional sales offices,
dealers and distributors throughout the world. Over the last 18 years,
Vela has evolved from a primarily OEM-focused board-level product company, to one
that directly serves over 1,000 customers in 40 countries worldwide. Over this time,
Vela’s encoder and decoder systems and boards, as well as its Emergency Alerting Systems
products have helped to create, edit, insert, distribute and monetize over one billion
discrete pieces of content. Since 1999, Vela has had a long-standing relationship with TFT Inc; the nations' leading manufacturer of EAS encoder and decoders.
